Scope:

This course has been designed to meet the requirements of STCW section VI/1-3. The course is open to all seafarers who are designated to provide elementary first aid on board ship. This course is ONLY valid for seafarers who are going to work in the Super Yachting Industry (RYA) and the Cruise line Industry, it is not valid in any other sector of the maritime industry.

Objective:

Take immediate action upon encountering an accident or medical emergency until the arrival of a person with medical first aid skills or a person in charge of medical care on board.

Introduction:

This course is designed for seafarers who are already in possession of a VALID certificate that is about to expire. Certificates which are already expired are NOT VALID and the seafarer would have to repeat the entire course.

Course Outline:

Understanding of immediate measures to be taken in cases of emergency, including the ability to

  • Control bleeding
  • Position causality
  • Apply resuscitation techniques
  • Appropriate measures of basic shock management
  • Appropriate measures in event of burns and scalds, including accidents caused by electric current
  • Rescue and transport causality
  • Improvise bandages and use materials in emergency kit

Prerequisites:

In possession of a VALID certificate that is about to expire.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Required

Completion:

Exit level: The competent learner will be able to perform the role of a crew member on-board.

Assessment: Written assessment & Practical evaluation
